S. Gerard Ruby, MD, MBA is a pathologist/physician with nearly 50 years in the medical laboratory space. He has been at nearly all levels in the laboratory, from technologist, to pathologist, medical director and chairman. As a physician entrepreneur, he built a pathology laboratory from scratch, grew it, and sold it. During his career, he invented the Safety Spec gross room tray, a device designed to reduce specimen misidentification, which was patented and brought to market and remains available today at safety-spec.com.
He has held national committee roles with the College of American Pathologists, along with past presidencies of the Chicago Pathology Society and the Illinois Society of Pathology.
After selling his laboratory and retiring from full-time practice, Dr. Ruby turned his attention to a different kind of work: writing. Decades of experience running a business, navigating governance and ownership transitions, and mentoring colleagues informally had produced a body of insight he wanted to organize and share more broadly. Ruby Group Publishing's Business and Personal Development titles are the result: practical frameworks grounded in what actually happens when a business changes hands, when internal controls fail, or when good ideas never make it past the idea stage. Additional titles are in the works...to be released in the future
He lives in the Midwest with his wife, close to his grown children and grandchildren, and can usually be found on a walk with his wife and their dog, Izzy.
